Four in five civil servants are now based outside London.

New data shows that since the Places for Growth programme launched to March 2025, 24,621 roles have now moved outside London.

The Places for Growth programme aims to bring the Civil Service closer to the communities it serves.

The data shows that the programme has exceeded its 22,000 target three years early.

Further progress is also being made to move half of Civil Service senior leadership into regions and nations, with 36.6 per cent of UK-based Senior Civil Servants now based out of London.

Cabinet Office Minister, Mark Ferguson said: "We are shifting power and decision making to local communities to ensure that we have a truly UK-wide Civil Service.

"Policy and decision makers must reflect the country we live in, so those making decisions understand how these are felt in the communities they impact.

"This is devolution by design and devolution by default, and we will unlock talent across the country to ensure the inner workings of government move with the times."
